Biographie
Laurel Aitken est un chanteur jamaïcain, bien que né à Cuba le 22 avril 1927 d'un père jamaïcain et d'une mère cubaine. Surnommé par les Anglais le Godfather of Ska (le parrain du Ska), Laurel Aitken était considéré comme l'un des grands noms de la scène ska et reggae. Il est mort d'une crise cardiaque à Leicester, le 17 juillet 2005, à l'âge de 78 ans.

Biographie
Laurel Aitken est un artiste jamaïquain, né Lorenzo Aitken le 22 avril 1927 à Cuba. Frère du chanteur Bobby Aitken il émigra en Jamaïque avec sa famille a l'âge de 11 ans et s'impliqua rapidement dans la scène musicale locale. Enregistrant du mento et du calypso dès le milieu des années 1950, il fut l'un des pionniers de la musique Ska jamaïquaine durant les années 1960 et connu un franc succès parmi les skinheads ainsi que d'autres amateurs de musique ska, reggae et rocksteady. En 1958 il sortit un single sur Double Face A comprenant Little Sheila et Boogie in my Bones qui fut son premier enregistrement sur R&B, le premier label de Chris Blackwell (fondateur d'Island Records). En 1960 il s'exile en Angleterre où il sera bientôt qualifié Godfather of Ska et Boss Skinhead. La période 1950-1970 verra sortir ses plus grands tubes, enregistrés chez Blue Beat Records, Pama Records et Trojan Records. Egalement producteur, il joua ainsi un rôle important dans la reconnaissance du ska et du reggae par le public Anglais. Il continua à se produire en concert pratiquement jusqu'à sa mort, il subi une crise cardiaque en 2004 avant de succomber un an plus tard à l'âge de 78 ans d'une nouvelle attaque le 17 juillet 2005 à Leicester, Angleterre.
